Here are a few common mistakes made by soldiers who attend the board. Think about these while you are practicing your performance. You are practicing right?

 

  1. Administration paperwork not updated before board attendance
  2. Not wearing the nameplate or shoulder boards under the jacket
  3. Sloppy looking tie
  4. Knocking on the door too lightly
  5. Dropping the salute before the president of the board
  6. Sitting at the position of attention incorrectly
  7. Fidgeting while sitting at the position of attention
  8. Biography is short and unrehearsed
  9. No eye contact when stating biography
  10. No eye contact when answering questions
  11. Not stating rank before speaking to board members (1SG, the 3 types of…)
  12. Looking up when thinking of an answer
  13. Using the dreaded “Ummm” too much
  14. Unfamiliar with the creeds
  15. Unfamiliar with unit history
  16. Unfamiliar with awards that are worn on the uniform
  17. Unfamiliar with current events
  18. Calling the Sergeant Major a First Sergeant on accident
  19. Not using a loud enough voice throughout the board
  20. Not saluting the president of the board after being dismissed
  21. Forgetting to state the unit motto when saluting the president
